Manhole Cover Sizes: All You Need to Know

Selecting a proper manhole cover size is more important than it seems. It impacts safety, traffic, and permanent maintenance. This will enable you to know the right size, whether you are working on a road, building site, or industrial site, so as to prevent any issues and have a functional infrastructure.

Why Size & Shape Matter

Why Size & Shape Matter

With manhole covers, size and shape do matter as far as safety and performance are concerned.

· Safety Factors

Proper fit protects individuals, and covers will not shift or fall out.

· Load-bearing & Traffic Suitability

The cover size influences the amount of weight it can support. Heavier traffic demands bigger, more durable manhole covers to handle the increased load.

· Effect of Material Choice

The weight and strength are influenced by different materials, e.g., ductile iron or composite. A lighter material will require a larger size.

Standard Size Ranges

Standard Size Ranges

· Round Covers (Diameter in mm/inches)

The most common and simplest to fit are round covers. The common sizes are:

  • 18″ (450 mm)
  • 24″ (600 mm)
  • 30 (750 mm)

Common sizes:

600 mm is common on roads, whereas 450 mm is also used on footpaths and smaller areas.

Typical U.S. Measurements:

In the U.S, standard sizes can include:

  • 24 inches (609 mm)
  • 30 (762 mm)
  • 36: (914 mm)

These are the ASTM and AASHTO sizes. Get more details at ASTM.

· Square/Rectangular Covers

Square covers are applied as access panels, cable pits, or vaults. It has sizes of 300x300m, 400x400m, and 900x900m.

· Special Sizes & Custom Orders

A special need? We can do special designs or special sizing on request.

These sizes vary from the different types of manhole cover you need.  For any custom cover, contact us now.

Load Classes Explained (EN 124)

Load Classes Explained (EN 124)

EN 124 establishes 6 categories of manhole covers in terms of their traffic and weight bearing:

  • A15: This can be used in green areas, footpaths, and parks.
  • B125: Best applied to areas with low traffic, such as driveways and sidewalks.
  • C250: Applied along curbs, small roads, or parking lanes.
  • D400: Constructed on main roads and high traffic.
  • E600: Constructed to suit factories, warehouses, and industrial parks.
  • F900: Needed in large traffic regions such as airports and docks.

Always select the correct load class to suit the project with respect to your traffic and usage. Find out about EN 124.

How to Measure a Manhole Cover Properly

How to Measure a Manhole Cover Properly

· Clear Opening vs OD

Always measure the clear opening—the usable inner access space—not the outer edge of the cover. This will make sure that your new cover will fit well and position appropriately on the manhole base.

· Frame and Lip Considerations

Put the frame and lip on your schedule. These components influence the total size and should fit perfectly to be safe, particularly where there are vehicles or traffic.

· Invert Elevation and Depth

Measures are taken in the investigation of the top of the cover through the invert level (the lowest point). This not only tells you the complete depth but also assists in designing drainage or pipe connections.

Application-Specific Size Selection

Application-Specific Size Selection

· Residential/Pedestrian Areas

Footpaths, gardens, or when used in small areas, go with a 450 mm cover rated A15. It is lightweight, safe to walk on, and does not require heavy machinery to install.

· Light Commercial & Driveways

To cover a driveway or light-use parking, use a 600 mm B125-rated cover. It processes vehicle traffic and provides water, cable, or sewer lines connections.

· Urban Roads & Heavy Traffic

Covers must be stronger on busy roads. Vehicles fit perfectly with a cover D400 of approximately 600-750mm, and it is also not easily damaged by recurring traffic load.

· Industrial, Airports, Docks

Areas of heavy loads should have covers of E600 or F900 rating. When lifting forklifts, trucks, or aircraft, choose larger dimensions, such as 900 mm, to avoid cracks and curves.

· Special Structures (Flushing, Scraper, Junction, Drop Manholes)

Flushing points, drop manholes, and junctions frequently require specially made covers. Collaborate with your supplier to select a size that would suit your layout and attend to your access requirements in order to select the size.

Conclusion

Conclusion

Choosing the right manhole cover size ensures safety, long-term durability, and compliance with infrastructure standards. Residential footpath, industry road, airport runway, etc, will impose different sizes and classes of loads. Browse through Kangkai, read our blog, or call us today for professional assistance.
